” I TRY TO VISUALIZE THIS LABYRINTH OF MULTIPLE WORLDS, THIS BAROQUE THEATRE WITH ITS LAYERED AND COMPLEX REALITIES………
THE ALLEGORICAL VISUAL LANGUAGE OF THE TRAUMAS AND HORRORS OF OUR PRESENT DAY GLOBAL SOCIETY………… Tony Monsanto, Curaçao 2011
Cinematographic portrait of visual artist Tony Monsanto. Born on Curaçao in 1946 into a family of Suriname parents, Monsanto grew up in the Netherlands where he studied at the Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam and later architecture at the Technical University Delft. Since returning to Curaçao, he worked full time as an artist. His work, characterized by a brilliant mastery of classical western painting techniques, contains both direct and discreet references to Caribbean legends and Afro-Caribbean traditions. It incorporates contemporary environmental and social issues dealing with the complexity of Caribbean identity and reality.
The documentary explores his life and work, philosophy of life, and social criticism. Family and friends talk about the artist, who passed away in 2014, and accompany the viewer on a journey through the ‘Mundu Mistiko’, the mystical world created by Tony Monsanto.
“WE ARE STILL IN AN AMBIVALENT PURIFICATION PROCESS TO LIBERATE OURSELVES FROM THE POST COLONIAL DISEASES OF CORRUPTION, DEPENDENCE, RACIAL PREDJUDICES TOWARDS THE OTHER AND OURSELVES AND A SEEMINGLY INCURABLE SENSE OF INFERIORITY”…………Tony Monsanto, Curaçao 2011
